Implant Treatments
Over the last 20 years, dental implants have become a desirable alternative to other methods of replacing missing teeth. Excellent success rates, and a range of treatment options give dentists a variety of new ways to treat and replace lost teeth.
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. When both the tooth, and the root are damaged, the best permanent replacement is a dental implant in conjunction with a ceramic crown. This solution both looks, and functions just like a natural tooth.
Dental implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaws. Due to the biocompatible properties of titanium, a dental implant fuses with the bone, and becomes an anchor for the replacement tooth. Such implants can be used in solutions for replacing single or multiple missing teeth. Implants can also be used to support full or partial dentures, dramatically improving denture retention and stability.
Why Choose Dental Implants?
- Without the root structure of a natural tooth, the jawbone can shrink making your face look older.
- There are no loose parts - the implant is stable, and comfortable.
- In most cases, an implant will last a patient for life.
and, perhaps most importantly
- Dental Implants LOOK and FEEL like natural teeth.
Treatment with dental implants is complicated, and takes meticulous planning for best results. At most dental practices, an implant team (including either a periodontist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, as well as a prosthodontist or a general dentist) is required to undertake the complex work of the implant procedure.
The Cosmetic Dental Centre is different. As a highly-trained and enormously experienced prosthodontic dentist who specialises in implants, Dr. Sam Sherif both designs and fits the implants, or performs necessary restorative work on faulty crowns, all at our luxury centre.
At the first appointment, we use an x-ray to determine if the jaw bone is adequate to hold the titanium posts. Models of the mouth are often made using a soft, pliable plastic compound. These models show where the gaps are located and provide measurements for a replacement tooth or a bridge. The modern implants being placed often only require one surgical procedure using a local anesthetic and sedative.
Is Age a Problem?
Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits of dental implants. However, health is more of a determining factor than age. If you are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you are probably healthy enough to have dental implants. Certain chronic diseases may contraindicate dental implant treatment. Your dentist at the Cosmetic Dental Centre will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants after a careful evaluation of your dental and medical history.
How Will Dental Implants Affect My Life?
Dental implant-supported replacement teeth look, feel, and function like natural teeth. This means that you can eat, and drink whatever you choose in the same way as you would with natural teeth. But, most importantly, dental implants improve quality of life in a very concrete way. Many patients who previously used conventional, removable dentures for the lower and upper jaws, or who had removable bridges, experience a significant improvement in their ability to chew food comfortably after their dental implant treatment. Other patients who may have felt embarrassed and worried because of their tooth problems are often overwhelmed by what new permanent teeth can do for their self-esteem.
